Three things every girl should know

I recently attended the “Ladies to Legends” event hosted by Varsity College Sandton. Graceful legends; former Mrs World: Candice Abrahams, style blogger Palesa Mahlaba, writer and comic Gilli Apter, Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel Peters and Varsity College Career Centre co-ordinator Edith Chetty took to the stage to inspire us. Their messages were powerful, insightful, funny and thought-provoking.

I am always a bit nervous when I attend women conferences. Let’s be honest; often these events turn into a battle cry of some sort that puts one group against another. Thankfully, this was not one of those events. Three thoughts captured my imagination, and I would like to share them with you.

Women lead from a position of influence; women don’t need a fancy title to change the world

While the stories shared were vastly different, the common threat was the incredible influence the women demonstrated. Their capacity to impact the character, development or behaviour of those around them far exceeded the title they hold. They shared stories of courage, words of wisdom and I could feel how their presence inspired the generation of young women coming after them.

We are all equal

The equality of women is not a gift in the hands of men that we must beg for, and profusely thank them for. We are born equal. We can step into that equality right now, without waiting for permission, without depending on someone else’s blessing. We can be everything and anything we want to be. Not only that, we owe it to the world to rise up and take our rightful place. Not tomorrow, but today, because the world is in desperate need of what we as a company of women can offer.

Education matters

There is a reason why education was denied to women for so long, and why women all over the world fight so hard for it. Education is the entry ticket to many positions and professions. For most of us, stepping into our destiny demands a serious commitment to education. Education not only equips you for your dream job, but it also empowers you to be a strong independent woman while it opens the door to positions of power, influence and leadership. A good education is the best gift you can ever give yourself. It is one of the few things that no-one can ever take away from you.

Why don’t you head over to the Varsity College website right now and enrol in one of their many courses as you take your first step into your destiny to become a force for good in your world? Visit their website at: www.varsitycollege.co.za to register.
