A fascinating look inside the life of a magistrate





Have you ever wondered what it feels like to sit on the other side of the bench in the courtroom? So did we and this week we had the privilege to speak to Mr JC Kruger a leading magistrate about his experience on the bench.


 
The first question we had to ask was; "why did you become a magistrate?"


I have a deep value for justice coupled with an intolerance for unfairness. I guess being Magistrate is the perfect position for me ensure some justice and fairness where appropriate and as the laws of this country dictate.

How do you deal with controversial cases? 

The most important thing is to keep a professional distance from all parties and not to get emotionally involved in the case. It is definitely one of those skills that you develop over time and it becomes easier the longer you do it.

What is the best career advice you ever received? 

To listen to everyone, this is very important in the courtroom, as each party has the right to be heard. Obviously, each party have their own agenda and version of the truth, so it is equally important to think twice before you open your mouth.

What do I need to do if I want to become a magistrate?

You will need experience in life and law.
